‘Margaret Wemyss, daughter of the said Peter Wemyss, and spouse to John Umphray merchant in Fochabers’ was among the
principal beneficiaries in the Last Will and Testament of her
aunt, Margaret Lindsay MS Gordon, subscribed on 29th
June 1805. She was bequeathed the sum of £60. To Alexander and
Mary Umphray, her children, was bequeathed £10 each; Mary was additionally
to receive ‘my metal watch’.
These bequests were however postponed, for the duration of the lifetimes of

Margaret and her children by Alexander Webster on 20th August 1821. ‘Mr. John Umphray,

to the matter.
Margaret Umphray and her daughter Mary were still living at the time of the discharge granted by them on
9th October 1822 but son Alexander was ‘now deceased’.

Margaret Ann Wemyss was a daughter of Peter, known on occasion as Patrick, Wemyss and Mary Gordon, whose marriage
contract was signed at Collithie on 1st December 1761 and recorded at Elgin on 8th November
1786.
It is surmised that Peter is to be identified with the ‘Mr Weims’ who was a witness to the christening of
Isobel Cattanach in 1766.
‘Peter Wemyss residing at Gibston’ was nominated as an executor in the Last Will and Testament subscribed by his
sister-in-law, Margaret Lindsay MS Gordon, in 1805, together with George Catanach, a brother-in-law to both of them.
Mary Gordon was a daughter of Charles Gordon, VI of Terpersie, and
Margaret Gordon.
