Aberdeen 20 August
1821.
Madam,
In consequence of a letter which I
received from Bailie George Alexander, Merchant
in Banff, who is married to the daughter of
the late Mr. John Umphray, Merchant in
Fochabers, I procured an extract of the last
will and testament of Mrs. Margt. Gordon
relict of the deceased John Lindsay late of
Madras, from which I observe that Mrs.
Umphray is entitled to the sum of £60, and
her children Alexander and Mary to £10 each,
at the death of the longest liver of your father
and mother, who are both now dead. The
purpose of my writing you is to request that
you will have the goodnefs to let me know to
whom the money was lent, which was liferented
by your father and mother, and who holds
the voucher for the money, that I may know
to whom I am to apply for payment of the
legacies bequeathed to Mrs. Umphray and
her children by Mrs. Lindsay. Please also
mention whether your father or mother lived
longest, and when the last of them died.
I am, Madam,
Your most obed Sert
