Thomas Cochrane

c. 1823 - 18th April 1911


On the evidence of the 1851 census, Thomas Cochrane was born c. 1823 at Dalry, the oldest known child of Thomas Cochran and Jean Crawford.

The marriage of Thomas Cochran and Margaret Galloway was recorded in the Dalry Parish Register for 1849:

Cochran - Thomas Merchant in Dalry and Margaret Galloway, daughter of James Galloway of Mains of Pitcon gave in their names for proclamation of banns 22nd September and after being regularly proclaimed were Married at Mains 25th September 1849 by the Revd Robert Stevenson Minister of Dalry.

Their son William Allan Cochrane’s 1871 birth certificate confirms that Thomas Cochran married Margaret Galloway on 25th September 1849 at Dalry.

At the time of the 1851 census, Thomas Cochran, 27, a provision merchant, was living at North Street, Dalry. Living with him were wife Margaret, 22, and son James, eleven months. All were entered as having been born in Dalry.

Thomas Cochrane acted as informant on the 1868 death certificate of his mother, Jean Cochran MS Crawford, and also on the 1860 death certificate of his father, Thomas Cochran.

When his son William Allan Cochrane was born in 1871, Thomas Cochrane was designated as a grocer.

When his daughter Jane married Robert Fulton in 1882, Thomas Cochrane was designated as a grain merchant.

Thomas Cochrane was mentioned in the Mutual Trust Deed and Settlement subscribed by his sister Mary Cochrane and Mary’s husband Aulay Steele, at Helensburgh on 28th March 1895 in connection with his children but was not himself named as a beneficiary.

Thomas Cochrane acted as informant on the death certificate of his brother, James Cochrane, on 18th May 1897.

Thomas Cochrane, merchant, widower of Margaret Galloway, died on 18th April 1911 at 11h 15m pm, at 17, Main Street, Dalry. His age was entered as 87 years. The causes of death were certified as cardiac disease, from which he had been suffering for one year, and pulmonary congestion, one day. The informant on the following day at Dalry was Thos W. Cochrane, the deceased’s son, entered as present.

Thomas Cochrane was recalled as a merchant (deceased) on the 1914 death certificate of his son, Thomas Walker Cochrane.

Children

Thomas Cochrane’s children were listed in Aulay Steele and Mary Cochrane’s Mutual Trust Deed and Settlement of 1895 and in the 1897 Codicil thereto as:

James Cochrane Junior, Grocer, Dalry, Ayrshire; Mary Cochrane or Blair, Dalry, Ayrshire; Robert Cochrane, Pitt Street, Glasgow; Jane Cochrane or Fulton; William (Allan) Cochrane and Thomas Cochrane all residing at Dalry, Ayrshire


James Cochrane Junior, so designed in order to distinguish him from his uncle, also James Cochrane, was appointed a Trustee in 1895 but died at some time between the Codicils of 1897 and 1906.


Robert Cochrane, then residing at 57, Dalhousie Street, Glasgow, acted as informant on the 1914 death certificate of his brother, Thomas Walker Cochrane.


Robert Fulton married Jane Cochrane on 21st February 1882 at Main Street, Dalry, After Banns according to the Forms of the U. P. Church. The Register was signed by George Morris, U. P. Church, and by witnesses Mary W. Gatherer and John Fulton.

Robert was a solicitor (bachelor), aged 28, usually resident at Bank Building, Dalry. His parents were entered as Robert Fulton, a farmer (deceased), and Annie Fulton MS Montgomery.

Jane was a grain merchant’s daughter (spinster), 22, usually resident in Main Street, Dalry.


William Allan Cochrane was born on 28th April 1871 at 1h 15m am, in Main Street, Dalry. The informant on 19th May was Thomas Cochrane, the child’s father, entered as present.

William Allan Cochrane was appointed as a Trustee and Executor, under the terms of a Codicil subscribed by his uncle by marriage, Aulay Steele, at Glasgow on 11th May 1906, to act along with with John King, the only one remaining of the three original Trustees, and Archibald Clark Steele.


Thomas W. Cochrane acted as informant on the 1911 death certificate of his father, Thomas Cochrane.

Thomas Walker Cochrane, general merchant (single), died on 7th March 1914 at 7h 30m pm, in Main Street, Dalry. His age appears to read 40 but the second digit is very indistict. The causes of death were certified as (grenchieclavis?) and syncope. The informant on the 9th at Dalry was Robert Cochrane, the deceased’s brother, of 57, Dalhousie Street, Glasgow.
