Archibald Clark Steele

5th August 1859 - 26th December 1926


Archibald Clark Steele, the third known son of John Steele and Janet McAuslan, named after his step-grandfather Archibald Clark, was born on 5th August 1859 at 11h 45m, in Main Street, Renton, Cardross Parish. The informant on the 27th at Cardross was John Steele, the child’s father, entered as present.

Archibald Clark Steele, marine engineer (bachelor), 31, usual residence ‘on board ship’, married Janet McLachlan, spinster, 28, on 30th April 1891, at 9, Upper Bridge Street, Alexandria, in the Parish of Bonhill, After Banns according to the Forms of the Free Church. The Register was signed by James McRobert, Minister, Renton, and by witnesses James Steele, presumably the groom’s brother, and Ida Gordon.

Archibald and Janet’s son, John Steele, was born on 25th April 1892 at 11h 15m am, at 350, Main Street, Alexandria. The informant on 10th May was Archd C. Steele, engineer, the child’s father, entered as present.

In the Mutual Trust Deed and Settlement of Aulay Steele, his uncle, and Mary Cochrane or Ross or Steele, Aulay’s wife, subscribed at Helensburgh on 28th March 1895 and in which he was named as a beneficiary, Archibald was designed ‘Archibald Clark Steele, Engineer, there’, i.e. Alexandria.

At the time of the 1901 census, Archibald C. Clark was living at Glenburn, Smollet Street, in town of Alexandria, Civil Parish of Bonhill, in premises having five rooms with one or more windows. The full entry reads:

Archibald Clark Steele was appointed as a Trustee and Executor, under the terms of a Codicil subscribed by Aulay Steele at Glasgow on 11th May 1906, to act along with John King, the only one remaining of the three original Trustees, and William Allan Cochrane.

Archibald Clark Steel, then of Glenburn, Alexandria, acted as informant on Aulay Steele’s 1908 death certificate.

Archibald was again referred to as ‘Archibald Clark Steele, Engineer, Alexandria’ in Aulay Steele’s Inventory, on 28th July 1908.

Archibald Clark Steele, marine engineer, married to Janet McLachlan, died on 26th December 1926 at eleven in the evening, at Glenburn, Smollet Street, Alexandria. He was 67 years of age. The causes of death were certified as fracture of the femur and cardiac failure. The informant on 28th December 1926 at Bonhill was John Steele, the deceased’s son, of 41, Walton Road, Aylesbury.
