John King

12th December 1852 - 20th May 1917

The birth of John King, son of James King and Agnes Steele, was recorded in the Cardross (Dunbartonshire) Parish Register:

John, lawful son of James King and Agnes Steele, was born at Renton, on the 12th Decr 1852

John King, colliery despatch clerk (bachelor), age entered as 27, although he had recently turned 33, resident at 27, Barrack Street, Hamilton, married Helen Robb on 22nd December 1885 at 27, Burnbank Road, Hamilton, After Banns According to the Forms of the United Presbyterian Church. The Register was signed by Peter Cunningham Duncanson, Minister of Auchingramont United Presbyterian Church, Hamilton, and by witnesses Ellen Lochhead and James Aulay King, the latter presumably the groom’s brother.

John King, 27, Burnbank Road, Hamilton, acted as informant on the 1895 death certificate of his father, James King.

In the Mutual Trust Deed and Settlement of Aulay Steele and his wife Mary Cochrane or Ross or Steele, subscribed by them at Helensburgh on 28th March 1895, John was referred to as ‘John King, Colliery Clerk, Hamilton’. John was one of three Trustees appointed in the original deed and was the only one of them so to act in 1908; of the other two, James Cochrane Junior was deceased by the time of the Codicil subscribed by Auley Steele alone at Glasgow on 11th December 1906; the Reverend James McRobert had emigrated to Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and was not expected to return. John’s younger brother, James Aulay King, was not so fortunate; the 1906 Codicil revoked his legacy.

John was again designed ‘John King, Colliery Clerk, Hamilton’ when he signed Auley Steele’s Inventory on 28th July 1908.

John King, military clerk, married to Helen Robb, died on 20th May 1917 at 0h 15m am, at 5, Burnbank Road, Hamilton. His age appears to have been entered as 55, although he was only 54. The cause of death was certified as arterio sclerosis. The informant on the following day at Hamilton was Minnie Robb, the deceased’s sister-in-law, of 27, Burnbank Road, Hamilton.
