At the time of the 1851 census, Thomas Cochran, 57, coal merchant, was living at Old Manse, Dalry. Living with him
were his wife Jean, 56, and four unmarried children;
Robert, 23, engine man;
Mary, 20, dressmaker;
James, 18, shopman, and
Jane, daughter, 15,
houseservant. All were entered as having been born in Dalry.
On her 1856 marriage certificate, Mary Cochran’s parents were entered as Thomas Cochran, carter, and Jane Cochran MS
Crawford.
Thomas Cochrane, carter, widower of Jean Crawford, died on 10th February 1870 at five in the morning, at
North Street, Dalry. His age was entered as 76. The cause of death was certified as disease of the heart, from which
he had been suffering for several months. The informant on the 14th at Dalry was Thomas Cochrane, the
deceased’s son.
Thomas Cochrane was recalled as a merchant (deceased) on his daughter Mary’s 1875 marriage certificate and as a coal
merchant (deceased) on her 1901 death certificate.
Thomas Cochrane was recalled as a carter (deceased) on the 1911 death certificate of his son, also Thomas.
On the combined evidence of the 1851 census and his 1870 death certificate, Thomas Cochran was born c. 1793 at
Dalry, Ayrshire.
