As Christian McColl, she appears, aged 6, in the 1841 census, living at Hookhead, Avondale, with her father,
Hugh McColl, five brothers and two sisters.
At the time of her marriage to Robert Wilson in 1859, Christina McColl was a
dairy maid (spinster), aged 24.
At the time of the 1891 census, Christina Wilson, a farmer’s widow, employer, aged 55, was living at Sidehill,
Avondale, in premises having two rooms with one or more windows. Living with her were her unmarried daughters
Jeanie, 22, a hosiery knitter, employed; Jessie B. Wilson, 18, farmer’s
daughter domestic servant; and Ellen McColl Wilson, 16, a hosiery knitter, employed; and son Gavin, 13, draper’s
apprentice, employed. All were entered as born in Avondale.
Christina Wilson, widow of Robert Wilson, farmer, died on 27th February 1914 at eight in the morning, at
Crofthead, Strathaven. Her age was entered as 78. The causes of death were certified as chronic Bright’s Disease,
from which she had been suffering for two years and six months, age and frailty. The informant at Strathaven on the
same day was the deceased’s son, Gavin Wilson, entered as present.
On the combined evidence of the 1841 census and her 1859 marriage certificate, Christina McColl was born c. 1834,
in Lanarkshire.

Christina McColl had a number of brothers and sisters, known from the 1841 census. These are Jean, born c. 1828,
presently known only from the 1841 census; Angus, c. 1830; Mary and Gavin, c. 1832 (twins); John, c. 1834
(Christina’s twin); William, c. 1836 (presently known only from the 1841 census and presumed to be Christina’s
brother); Hugh, c. 1838, and James, 1841. All others apart from Jean, William and James are known from both the 1841 and
1851 census records.
John later married Elizabeth Gemmell. He was a farmer and died of consumption on 30th September 1868, at
Windyedge, Parish of Avondale.
James was a scholar, aged 9, at the time of the 1851 census and acted as informant on the 1883 death certificate of
their father, Hugh McColl.
