Hugh McColl’s birth was recorded in the Avondale Parish Register, dated 18th December 1802:
Hugh son to Angus McColl, Appin, Argyleshire & Mary Rankin his spouse
According to the 1851 census, Hugh was born in Appin.
Hugh McColl’s marriage to Janet Wiseman was recorded in the Stonehouse
Parish Register, in September 1826.
At the time of the 1841 census, taken on the night of 6th June, Hugh McColl, farmer at Hookhead, Parish
of Avondale, was entered as 35 years of age and born outwith the County of Lanarkshire. His wife Janet is
conspicuously absent from the record, having died on 8th May; Hugh was therefore a widower. Living with
him were Jean, 12; Angus, 10; Mary and Gavin, twins, both 8; Christina and John, also twins, both 6; William, 4, and
Hugh, 2, all born in Lanarkshire. I presume that William was his son, all the others were certainly his children.
The final member of the household was Mary McColl, 20, a farm servant, also born in Lanarkshire.
In 1851, Hugh McColl was again at Hookhead, aged 48, farmer of 70 acres, born Argyle, Appin. Living with him were
his wife Janet (this refers to Janet Morrison), 36, ‘farmer’s wife (labr)’ and unmarried children Angus,
20, wright; Gaven, son, 18, ‘farmer’s son twin’; Mary, daur, 18, ‘farmer’s daur twin’; John, son, 15, farmer’s son;
Hugh, son, 12, farmer’s son, and James, son, 9, scholar. The final member of the household was Helen Morrison,
visitor, unmarried, 26, farm servt. All apart from the head of the household were entered as having been
born in Avondale.
Hugh McColl was designated as a farmer when his daughter Christina McColl
married Robert Wilson in 1859 and was recalled as a farmer (deceased) when
Christina died in 1914.
Hugh McColl, farmer of Hookhead, Avondale, acted as the informant on the 1868 death certificate of his son, John
McColl.
Hugh McColl, farmer, married 1st to Janet Wiseman, 2nd to Janet Morrison and 3rd
to Jean Strang, died on 25th April 1883 at 4h 5m am, at Hookhead, Parish of
Avondale. He was entered as 81 years of age. The causes of death were certified as cramp and colic, from which he
had been suffering for five days. The informant at Strathaven on the following day was James McColl, who was entered
as present.
Forebears |
‘Angus McColl, Appin, Argyleshire’ was referred to in the 1802 entry relating to the birth of his son, Hugh, in the
Avondale Parish Register.
Angus McColl was recalled as a gardener and forester (deceased) on Hugh’s 1883 death certificate.
Mary Rankin was recalled only as Mary McColl (deceased) on Hugh’s 1883 death certificate. Mary’s grandson, James
McColl, was unable to supply her maiden name. Hugh McColl’s 1802 birth record supplies this
detail; her name was Mary Rankin.
