At the time of the 1851 census, Jane Cochrane was a houseservant, aged 15, living in the family home at Old Manse,
Dalry.
At the time of the 1861 census, Jane Cochran was unmarried, 25, dressmaker, born Dalry, living with her elder
sister, Mary, in New Street, Dalry.
Hugh Kidd married Jeanie Cochrane on 18th August 1868 at Dalry, After Banns according to the Forms of the
United Presbyterian Church. The Register was signed by George Morris, Minster of the U. P. Church, and by witnesses
Wallace Kidd and M. Cochrane.
Hugh was a mason (bachelor), 28, usually resident Vennel Street, Dalry. His parents were entered as Thomas Kidd,
pitheadman, and Annie Kidd MS Smith.
Jeanie was a dressmaker (spinster), 30, usually resident in Manse Close, Dalry.
Jean Cochrane or Kidd of Dalry was still living in 1897.
She is known from the Mutual Trust Deed and Settlement subscribed by his sister
Mary Cochrane and Mary’s husband
Aulay Steele, at Helensburgh on 28th March 1895 and from the
Codicil thereto, subscribed by the same parties, again at Helensburgh, on 18th May 1897, in which she
was named as a beneficiary.
On the evidence of the 1851 census, Jean Cochrane was born c. 1835 at Dalry, the fifth and final known child of
Thomas Cochran and
Jean Crawford.

Jean’s children were listed in 1895 and again in 1897 as:
Thomas Kidd, Teacher, Larkhall; Jeanie Kidd and Annie Kidd both residing at Dalry Ayrshire
‘Thomas Kidd, Teacher in Larkhall’ is also known from an IOU to the value of £82, in favour of his uncle by marriage, Aulay Steele, dated 2nd July 1900, which is included in Aulay Steele’s Inventory of 1908.
