Henry Archibald

11th April 1806 - 7th February 1877

The birth and christening of Henry Archibald were recorded at Kinglassie, Fife:

20th Apr. Henry Son of Wm Archbald Labourer in Barron & his wife Jean Lumsden born 11th Apr. 1806

Proclamations pertaining to the forthcoming marriage of Henry Archibald, in Leslie, Fife, to Agnes Wallace, in St Ninians, Stirlingshire, were recorded in the Saint Ninians Parish Register, in an entry dated 11th June 1837, and in Leslie on 2nd July. The latter refers to ‘Margt Wallace’ but the Christian name may be taken to be a clerical error.

The Caledonian Mercury, Monday, 11th November 1844, Magistrates of Edinburgh column, listed Henry Archibald as a Bailie under ‘Leslie Magistrates’.

In connection with the births and baptisms of his daughters Jane, Margaret and Agnes in 1842, 1845 and 1847, all recorded in three consecutive entries in 1849, he was entered as ‘Henry Archibald Wright in Leslie’.

At the time of the 1851 census, Henry Archibald was living on Main Street, Leslie. The entry runs:

Henry Archibald, 44, House Carpenter (employing 7 Sons [sic] and 3 ap), born Fife, Kinglassie
Agnes, wife, 34, born Fife, Markinch
William, son, 13, scholar
Thomas, son, 11, scholar
Margaret, daur, 6, scholar
Agnes, daur, 3, scholar
Henry, son, 8 months

All five children were entered as having been born in Leslie.

In 1871, Henry Archibald was still in Leslie, in premises having four rooms with one or more windows. The entry runs:

Henry Archibald, 64, master joiner employing twelve men and eight boys, born Fifeshire, Kinglassie
Agnes, wife, 55, born Fifeshire, Markinch
Margaret, daur, unmarried, 26, clerk to head of family, born Fifeshire, Leslie
Agnes, daur, unmarried, 23, born Fifeshire, Leslie
Henry, son, unmarried, 20, joiner, born Fifeshire, Leslie

In the next entry are Thomas Archibald, a joiner, and his wife, Jane, both 30, and their three children. It is surmised that Thomas was Henry’s son, entered as living in the family home and aged 11 twenty years previously, and one of his employees.

Henry Archibald was a master joiner at the time of his daughter Margaret Archibald’s marriage to Matthew Barr Baird in 1874.

Henry Archibald, a joiner (master), married to Agnes Wallace, died on 7th February 1877 at 6h 30m am, at Oldtown, Leslie, Fife. He was 70 years of age. The causes of death were certified as paralysis agitans, from which he had suffered for ten years, and chronic cystitis, from which he had suffered for eight months. The informant on 15th February 1877 was the deceased’s son, Thomas Archibald, not present.

His daughter Margaret Archibald’s 1907 death certificate recalled Henry Archibald as a builder (master) (deceased).
