Margaret Archibald |
8th March 1845 - 6th April 1907 |
Margaret Archibald’s birth and christening were belatedly recorded in 1849 in the Leslie (Fife) Parish Register,
with the permission and consent of the Kirk Session:
Henry Archibald Wright in Leslie and Agnes Wallace his wife, had their Daughter Margaret born 8. March 1845 and baptized by the Revd Mr Johnstone.
Margaret appears living in the family home in Main Street, Leslie, in 1851, as a scholar, aged six.
Margaret was still living with her parents in 1871. She was unmarried, aged 26 and ‘Clerk to Head of Family’.
At the time of her marriage to Matthew Barr Baird on 4th August
1874, Margaret Archibald was a joiner’s daughter, spinster, aged 29. Her usual place of residence was Leslie, Fife.
Margaret Baird MS Archibald, married to Matthew Barr Baird, a steel manufacturer, died on 6th April 1907
at 11h 30m pm, at West House, Bothwell. She was 62 years of age. The various causes of death
were certified as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and dilatation of the heart, from which she had been suffering for
‘several years’ and fatty disease of the heart, two years. The informant, on 8th April 1907, was Matt. B.
Baird, widower, present.
Brothers and Sisters |
Margaret’s sisters, Jane, born 2nd November 1842, and Agnes, born 17th March 1847, were also
recorded in the Leslie Register of Births in 1849, along with Margaret, in three consecutive entries, with, as
previously stated, the permission and consent of the Kirk Session. There is no sign of Jane in the family home in
the 1851 census but Agnes was entered as a scholar, aged three. This is presumably the same Agnes Archibald who was
a witness to Margaret’s marriage in 1874.
Margaret also had three brothers, all known from the 1851 census; William, 13, and Thomas, 11, both scholars, and
Henry, eight months. All were entered as born in Leslie.
In 1871, Agnes, 23, and Henry, 20, a joiner, were still living in the family home in Leslie, Fife. Thomas, a joiner
aged 30, his wife Jane, also 30, and their three children are found in the next entry, in premises having three
rooms with one or more windows.
Thomas acted as informant on the death certificates of both their parents in 1877 and 1878 respectively.
