Agnes Steele |

The birth and baptism of Agnes Steele, the third of five known children of John
Steele and Margaret McAulay, were recorded in 1821, in Cardross
(Dunbartonshire) Parish:
Steel - Agnes, daur to John Steel and Margaret McAulay was born at Renton the 22d Febry Baptd 2d March 1821
Agnes Steele married James King in 1848.
James and Agnes’s first child was born later that same year:
John, lawful son of James King and Agnes Steele was born at Renton 22d Decr 1848 and baptized 21 January 1849
John evidently did not survive as another son named John King was born
almost four years later.
A daughter, Margaret Clark Steele, was born on 8th May 1855 at 2h 30m, in Back
Street, Renton. The child’s father, who acted as informant on the 26th at Cardross, was James King, a
joiner, aged 46, born in Barony Parish, Glasgow. Agnes was entered as 34 years of age and it was indicated that
Margaret was her fifth child. Of the children of the marriage, there were two boys deceased and one still living,
leaving one child unaccounted for.
A further son, James Aulay King, was born in 1861.
‘Agnes Steel Spouse of James King Wright in Renton’ was named as a beneficiary in the 1853 Deed and Settlement of
her stepfather, Archibald Clark, and mother, Margaret McAulay, but in the
event predeceased both parties; her share, amended by the Codicil of 1866 to £500, fell to be divided among her
children, ‘equally share and share alike’.
Agnes King, married to James King, bone merchant, died on 15th December 1863 at 4h
30m am, at Main Street, Renton. Her age was entered as 42. The cause of death was certified as apoplexy,
from which she had been suffering for six hours. The informant on the 26th at Cardross was Robert
(Ferrier?), an acquaintance, who had not been present.
In the Mutual Trust Deed and Settlement of Aulay Steele and his wife
Mary Cochrane or Ross or Steele, subscribed by them at Helensburgh on
28th March 1895, Agnes was recalled as ‘Agnes Steele or King late sister of me the said Auley Steele’.
