The marriage of Gavin Marshall and Jean Young was recorded in the Galston (Ayrshire) Parish Register:
Marshall Young 3 Sabbaths Galston 30th Nov 1850. Gavin Marshall in the Parish of Glafsford & Jean Young at Lanfine in this Parish gave up their names in order to marriage & were proclaimed three Sabbaths.
It was also recorded in the Glassford Parish Register:
1st Decr Gavin Murshall in this Parish and Jean Young in the Parish of Loudoun three days.
According to the 1863 birth certificate of his daughter, Isabella, Gavin Marshall married Jean Young on
20th December 1850 at Lily Loan, in the Parish of Loudoun. However, this date seems to stand in
isolation. The date was given as 25th December 1850 on the birth certificates of his children Christina
in 1867, James in 1869 and Gavin in 1871.
It might be noticed that there appears to have been a conflict of jurisdiction between the adjacent parishes of
Galston and Loudoun.
Gavin Marshall was designated as a stone quarrier when he acted as informant on the 1856 birth certificate of his
daughter, Janet.
Gavin Marshall was designated as an iron stone quarrier when he acted on the 1858 birth certificate of his son,
William.
At the time of the 1861 census, Gavin Marshall was living in the Village of Chapelton, Eastern Division, in the
Parish of ‘Glasford’, in premises having one room with one or more windows. He was 33 years of age and a quarry
labourer. His place of birth was entered as ‘Glasford’. Living with him was his wife, Jane, 30, born in Ayrshire,
Loudoun; daughters Jane, 9, and Margaret, 6, both scholars and born in
Avondale, and son William, 2, and daughter Janet, both born in ‘Glasford’.
Gavin Marshall was designated as a surfaceman when he acted as informant on the 1863 birth certificate of his
daughter, Isabella.
‘Gaven’ Marshall was designated as a road surfaceman when he acted as informant on the 1867 birth certificate of his
daughter, Christina.
Gavin Marshall acted as informant on the 1868 death certificate of his father, William Marshall.
Gavin Marshall was again designated as a road surfaceman when he acted as informant on the 1869 birth certificate of
his son, James.
Gavin Marshall acted as informant on the 1871 birth certificate of his ‘son’, Gavin, and was designated as a road
surfaceman.
In 1871, Gavin Marshall was living in ‘Boghall on the Glasgow Road’, in the Village of Chapelton, in the Civil
Parish of ‘Glasford’, in premises having two rooms with one or more windows. He was aged 43 and a road surface man.
Living with him were his wife, Jean, aged 40; unmarried daughters Jean, aged 19, silk weaver, and Janet, 10,
scholar. All places of birth were as stated in the 1861 census. The latest additions to the family were daughters
Janet, 7, scholar, and Christina, 3; son Francis, 2, and daughter Marion, one month, all born in ‘Glasford’.
Gavin Marshall acted as informant on the 1874 death certificate of his wife, Jean Young.
Gavin Marshall was designated as a road surfaceman when his daughter Jeanie married
James Watson in 1875.
Gavin Marshall, widower, 50, of Chapelton, ‘Glasford’, married
Jane Hamilton on 28th March 1879 at Wakefield (or Hakefield?),
East Kilbride, After Banns according to the Established Church of Scotland. The Register was signed by John McGavin,
Minister of Capelton (sic), and by witnesses Andrew Marshall and Bessie Watt.
In 1881, Gavin Marshall was again living in Chapelton, in premises having two rooms with one or more windows. He was
53 years of age and a road surfaceman. Living with him were (second) wife, Jane, 44; daughter Christina, 13; son
Francis, 12, scholar, and daughter Marion, scholar, 10. All members of the family were entered as born in
‘Glasford’.
In 1891, Gavin Marshall was in Brownhall, in the Quoad Sacra Parish of Chapelton, in the Civil Parish of
Glassford, in premises having two rooms with one or more windows. He was aged 63 and employed as a surfaceman.
Living with him were his wife Jeanie, 54, daughter Marion, unmarried, aged 20, employed as a stocking machinist, and
granddaughter Jeanie, 8, scholar. All members of the family were entered as born in Glassford.
In 1901, Gavin Marshall was living in Bankfield, East Kilbride, in premises having two rooms with one or more
windows. He was 73 years of age, a ‘foreman surfaceman’, worker. Living with him were wife Jean, 64, and daughter
Marion, single, 30, hosiery machinist, worker.
Gavin Marshall, road foreman, married to 1st Jean Young and 2nd Jean Hamilton, died on
25th August 1901 at ten in the evening, at Chapelton. His age was entered as 74. The cause of death was
certified as cardio syncope, from which he had been suffering for twenty minutes. The informant on the
28th at Chapelton was the deceased’s daughter, Marion Marshall, entered as present.
An entry in the Register of Corrected Entries for the Parish of Glassford in the County of Lanark, p. 68, narrates
as follows:
The following Report of Result of a Precognition has been received touching The Death of Gavin Marshall Registered under No 14 in The Register Book of Deaths for the year 1901. Name, age and sex - Gavin Marshall, 77 years, male.
When and where died - 1901 August 25th in his own house Weir Row Chapelton.
Cause of death - Natural causes. Probably failure of the heart. Action suddenly. Dr Wm Mason Strathaven saw body after death.

William Marshall was a ‘Farmer in Silverig’, Glassford Parish, when his son Gavin was born in 1827.
William Marshall, a spirit dealer, married to Margaret Ballentine, died on 10th March 1868 at five in the
morning, at Boghall, Chapelton, in the Parish of Glassford. He was entered as 84 years of age. The cause of death
was entered as debility; no medical attendant was present. The informant at West Quarter two days later was the
deceased’s son, Gavin Marshall.
William Marshall was recalled as a farmer (deceased) on the 1901 death certificate of his son, Gavin Marshall.
On the evidence of her 1870 death certificate, Margaret Ballantine was born c. 1793.
Margaret Marshall, widow of William Marshall, farmer, died on 15th May 1870 at 11h
25m pm, at Boghall, in the Parish of Glassford. She was entered as 76 years of age. The cause of death
was certified as influenza, from which she had been suffering for fourteen days. The informant at West Quarter on
the following day was the deceased’s son, Andrew Marshall.
Margaret Marshall MS Ballantyne was recalled as deceased on the 1901 death certificate of her son, Gavin Marshall.
Margaret Ballantyne had an older sister, Betty, whose birth and baptism were recorded in the Glassford Parish
