Jean Hamilton |
c. 1837 - 18th April 1909 |
Jane Hamilton was a spinster, aged 41, usually resident at Chapelton in the Parish of ‘Glasford’, at the time of her
marriage to Gavin Marshall in 1879. Her parents were entered as James Hamilton, a farmer, and Jane Hamilton MS
McGavin.
It is surmised that John McGavin, the Minister of Chapelton, who performed the ceremony, was the bride’s maternal
uncle, or other close relative. Jane’s mother’s surname was variously recorded as McGavin and McGaan and it is noted
from the Rev. Mr McGavin’s
graduation record from
the University of Glasgow that he graduated (in 1859) under the name of McGaan. (According to the same source,
John McGavin died on 31st December 1890.)
Jean Marshall, second wife and widow of Gavin Marshall, died on
18th April 1909 at 7h 40m pm, at Chapelton. Her age was entered as 73. The causes
of death were certified as age and frailty and sudden failure of the heart. The informant on the 20th at
Glassford was John McPherson, occupier.
Jean’s parents were recalled on this occasion as James Hamilton, a farmer, and Jean Hamilton MS McGann, both
deceased.
On the combined evidence of the census records and her 1879 marriage certificate, Jean Hamilton was born c. 1837, in
Glassford Parish.
