Parents

On the evidence of the 1841 census, Francis Young was born c. 1790 and Jean Woodburn c. 1805, both in Ayrshire.

The marriage of Francis Young and Jean Woodburn was recorded in the Loudoun (Ayrshire) Parish Register:

Francis Young and Jean Woodburn both in this Parish gave in their Names and were regularly proclaimed & married July 31st

At the time of the 1841 census, Francis Young, aged 50, farmer, was living at Leeloan in the Parish of Loudoun, Ayrshire. Living with him were Jean (presumably his wife), 35, and Janet, 15; Alexander, 14, ‘Sho. Ap.’ (i.e. an apprentice of some kind); Jean, 10; Hugh, 8; Francis, 6; William, 4, and Marion, 1, presumably his children. All were entered as having been born in Ayrshire.

The melancholly demise of Francis Young is recorded in the Loudoun Parish Register of Burials, in an entry dated 17th January 1846:

Francies Young farmer in Leelon parish of Loudoun he went derenged in his mind and was taken to the assalm in Glasgow and dyed there and was brought out and interred in Newmilns Churchyard in Thomas Fleming Carrer in Darvel Burring Ground

Francis Young was recalled as a farmer (deceased) on the 1874 death certificate of his daughter, Jean Marshall MS Young. This source also identifies Jean Young MS Woodburn as the younger Jean’s mother. There is no indication that the older Jean was deceased at that time.
