James McAuslane Steele

19th February 1857 - 7th June 1931


James McAuslane Steele, the second known son of John Steele and Janet McAuslane, was born on 19th February 1857 at 11h 30m am in Alexandria. The informant on 2nd March at Bonhill was John Steele, the child’s father, entered as present.

James McAuslane Steele married Lillias McNaught on 28th June 1892 in Glasgow.

James and Lillias’s daughter, Lillias Grace Steele, was born on 31st March 1893 at 2h 30m am, at 177, Main Street, Alexandria. The informant on 17th April at Bonhill was James McA. Steele, journeyman baker, the child’s father, entered as present.

In the Mutual Trust Deed and Settlement of Aulay Steele, his uncle, and Mary Cochrane or Ross or Steele, Aulay’s wife, subscribed at Helensburgh on 28th March 1895, in which he was named as a beneficiary, James was designated ‘James Steele, Baker, Alexandria’.

At the time of the 1901 census, James Steele was living at 12, Greenfield Street, Govan, in premises having two rooms with one or more windows. The full entry reads:

On his wife Lillias’s 1928 death certificate, James McAuslane Steele was designated as a baker (master).

James McAslan Steele, baker, retired, widower of Lilias McNaught, died on 7th June 1931 at nine in the evening, at Viewfield, Kames, in the county of Argyll. His usual address was entered as 65, Barfillan Drive, Cardonald, Glasgow. He was 74 years of age. The causes of death were certified as valvular disease of the heart and embolism. The informant on the following day at Tighnabruaich was J. McNaught, the deceased’s brother-in-law.
