William Mellis |
c. 1770 - 18?? |
Note however an unwelcome complication arising in connection with the following entry in the Kildrummy
(Aberdeenshire) Parish Register, dated 25th November 1798:
William Mellis’s date of birth and parentage have yet to be established but he appears to have been born c. 1770.
Alexr Mellis in Huntly & Isabella Catanach were proclaimed & married Decr 1st
Why was Mr Mellis’s Christian name given as Alexander on this occasion? Whatever the explanation, the union of
William Mellis and Isobel Catanach around this time is attested by the
circumstance that their three daughters graced the Huntly Parish Register of Births in 1799, 1801 and 1803
respectively.
William Mellis was designated a flax dresser in Huntly, in connection with the birth of daughter Helen in 1801 and
Jane in 1803.
In 1830, William Mellis, Merchant in Huntly, was appointed one of two executors in the Last Will and Testament of
his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Catanach.
William Mellis was recalled as deceased on the 1879 death certificate of his daughter, Jane. The informant was the
deceased’s son, William Leiper, who neglected to supply his grandfather’s
occupation.
