John Baird

John Baird was born c. 1817 in Baillieston.

John married Margaret Muirhead in 1851, as recorded in the Old Monkland or Coatbridge Parish Register:

John Baird, Clerk, Clyde Ironworks, in this parish, and Margaret Muirhead in Barony Parish, Glasgow, were married at Tollcrofs on the first day of July 1851 by the Rev James Reston, Minister of James Church, United Presbyterian Church, Dundee.

The corresponding entry in the Barony Parish Register for June 1851 runs:

22 John Baird, clerk, Old Monkland Parish, & Margaret Muirhead, residing at Tollcrofs, Shettleson Parish

At the time of the 1851 census, John Baird, clerk at ironworks, 33, and his wife Margaret, 25, both born in Old Monkland, were living in ‘Village of Clyde Ironworks’.

In 1861, John and his wife Margaret were living in Clyde Cottage, Clyde Ironworks, Old Monkland, in premises having nine rooms with one or more windows. The full entry reads:

John Baird, 43, Cashier Iron & Coal Work, born Lanark(shire), New Monkland
Margaret Baird, wife, 39, born Lanark, Govan
Matthew Baird, nephew, unmarried, scholar, born Lanark, New Monkland
Margaret Gemmel, unmarried, 19, general servant, born Lanark, Cambuslang

In 1871, Clyde Cottage was recorded as having eight rooms with one or more windows:

Margaret died on 24th April 1883. John Baird, present, widower of the deceased, acted as informant on the same day at Baillieston.

In 1891, John was a retired widower living in Hayston, Bothwell, in premises having seven rooms with one or more windows:

John Baird, steel manufactuer (retired), widower of Margaret Muirhead, died on 26th June 1893 at 2h 20m, at Hillside, Auchingormont Road, Hamilton. His age was entered as 75. The causes of death were certified as acute intestinal obstruction, from which he had been suffering for fourteen days, and senile decay. The informant on the same day was M. B. Baird, the deceased’s nephew (present).
