Mary Boyd

11th January 1887 - 20th July 1970

Mary Boyd (right) with Olive McIntyre and George Stuart Brown at Dunrowan, Langbank

Mary was born on 11th January 1887 at four in the morning, at 4, Wellfield Street, Glasgow. The informant was the child’s father, John Boyd. Her date of birth was entered as 11th January 1890 on her 1970 death certificate but this detail is incorrect.

Mary appears in the 1891 census record, living with her parents, two brothers, and two older sisters in a tenement property at 113, Wellfield Street.

Mary married William McIntyre on 30th December 1912, at 216, West Regent Street, Glasgow, after publication of banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland.

Mary was entered as a shop saleswoman, spinster, and her age was given as 24. This would appear to be inaccurate since on the evidence of her birth certificate she was 25.

The usual residence given for both bride and groom was 28, Gardner Street, Glasgow. The witnesses were Alexander Downie and Elizabeth Boyd, the latter presumably being Mary’s sister.

Mary Boyd died on 20th July 1970, at 1h 30m am. She died at 1, Ayton Road, Glasgow, but her usual address was entered as 92, Camphill Avenue, Glasgow.

The causes of death were certified as cerebral vascular degeneration, and arterio sclerosis. The informant was Edward A. B. McIntyre, her son.

Brothers and Sisters

Mary was the last of five known children. She had two sisters and two brothers. Elizabeth Jack Boyd was born on 18th November 1875 at 9h 30m am at 8, Gourlay Street, Glasgow. William Pinkerton Boyd was born on 30th November 1876 at 4, Wellfield Street, Springburn, at what appears to be six in the morning. James Boyd was born on 11th October 1878 at four in the morning, also at 4, Wellfield Street. A further sister, Jeanie Gardner Boyd, was born on 23rd March 1883 at 6h 30m am, again at 4, Wellfield Street.

In 1881, Elizabeth, aged 5, William, aged 4, and James, aged 3, were all living in the family home at 4, Wellfield Street.

In 1891, William was a fitter’s apprentice, aged 14; James was a scholar, aged 12; Jeanie was also a scholar, aged 8, all living in the family home at 113, Wellfield Street. Elizabeth, a scholar, aged 15, was living with her grandmother, Elizabeth Jack.
