1752 - 7th August 1835

An entry relating to Robert Browny, dated 7th November 1752, was recorded in the Tough Parish (Aberdeenshire) Register:

Charles Browny in Tilliriach had a Child baptized by the name of Robert witnefses Patrick Wilson & James Duckison in Tilliriach

Robert Brown, otherwise Brownie, married Barbara Urquhart, as recorded in the Leochel and Cushnie (Aberdeenshire) Parish Register, in an entry dated 26th June 1780:

Said Day Robert Brownie and Barbara Urquhart both in this Parish were Married

When their daughter Agnes was born in 1781, Robert and Barbara Brown were in Mains of Tillyfour, Parish of Tough.

According to the family gravestone (Monumental Inscription No 120, The Kirkyard of Cluny, compiled by Sheila M. Speirs, published by Aberdeen & North-East Scotland Family History Society, first published 1991, 2008 reprint, p. 13), Robert Brown died on 7th August 1835, aged 84, implying a birth year of c. 1751. It would appear that his actual age was 82.

Robert Brown was recalled as a ‘farmer (deceased)’ on the 1859 death certificate of his son, James Brown.

Forebears

The purport of the monumental inscription referred to above, in recording the deaths of what appear to be three generations of the family, is that Robert Brown’s parents were Charles Brown and Elizabeth Barron (c. 1719 - 17th March 1803), and that his paternal grandparents were Robert Browny (c. 1687 - 26th August 1737) and Agnes ‘Crysty’ (c. 1700 - 19th January 1751).

Robert Brown had at least one younger sister, Mary, whose baptism was recorded in the Midmar Parish Register, in an entry dated 1st December 1765:

Charles Brownie & Elizabeth Barron in Hebetie had a Daughter Baptized, Named Mary
