Janet Ireland

1782 - ?

Janet Ireland and her brother James were baptised at Scone Parish, Perthshire, on 2nd February 1782:

February 2nd Jo. Ireland & Margt Watt in Quarrymill had two children baptized by the names of James and Jannet.

Janet Ireland and George Jack were ‘booked for proclamation’ in order to marriage on 17th December 1814 at Saint Madoes, Perth. It was stated that George was ‘in this parish’ but Janet’s parish was not indicated.

George and Janet subsequently settled at Leetown, Errol Parish, Perthshire.

They were shown as resident in Leetown in the 1841 census. Janet’s age was given as 55.

In 1851, Janet was still resident in Leetown but by now she was a widow, George having apparently died in the meantime. Her age was entered as 68 and the place of her birth as Scone, Perthshire. She was designated as a vintner, an occupation that she had presumably taken up since the death of her husband. Also resident with her were her daughter Ann, aged 31, a house servant, her granddaughter Jane Melvill (presumably the same Jane who had been resident in the household, aged 4, in 1841), aged 13, and a grandson, James Boyd, aged 4.

Jane was Ann’s illegitimate daughter, Jean Melville, whose father was William Melville.

Forebears

Janet Ireland’s parents were John Ireland and Margaret Watt.

John and Margaret were married at Scone, Perthshire, on 22nd July 1780, an event also recorded in the ‘Acts and Proceedings of the sefsion of Methven’, also Perthshire, on the following day. John was at that time resident in Scone Parish and Margaret in Methven.

On the evidence of the entries in the Scone Parish Register relating to the baptism of their three known children, John was a miller at Quarrymill.

Brothers and Sisters

Janet had two known brothers.

James, apparently her twin, was also baptised at Scone on 2nd February 1782.

John was also baptised at Scone, on 1st February 1784. The relevant Parish Register entry runs:

John Ireland Miller at quarrymill & Margaret Watt had a child baptized by the name of John
