He was married to Catherine McDonald in 1815. The Buchanan Parish Register
indicates that on 24th November in that year:
On the evidence of his 1863 death certificate, John McIntyre was born c. 1793, though the location has yet to be
positively established.
John McIntyre and Catherine MacDonald both in this Parish gave up their names for Proclamation on one Sabbath in order to marriage.
John died on 28th August 1863. His death certificate designated him as an outdoor labourer, and stated
that he was married, though unfortunately it did not say whom he was married to. He was subsequently referred to as
a ‘general labourer’ on the death certificate of the lady, Catherine McDonald, who has been identified as his wife.
The cause of death was entered as ‘Crushed to death in Slate Quarry’.
The incident took place at Sallachy, Buchanan.
Significantly, on the 1870 death certificate of his daughter Margaret, John was recalled as ‘Late Quarry
proprietors Labourer (deceased)’. When John McIntyre, his son, died the following year, John senior was recalled as
a ‘Slate Quarry Labourer (deceased)’.
This probably establishes the link fairly clearly, but there is unfortunately no supporting
evidence from the 1861 census record for Buchanan Parish.

John McIntyre’s parents are entered on his death certificate as
Donald McIntyre, woodsman, and
Marjory McIntyre MS Martin.
This is slightly odd, in that - unusually - five of the other children of the same couple were retrospectively
listed in a block in the Buchanan Parish Register, in the space otherwise allocated to 1821-22. No reference is made
to John. However, it has to be stated that since Donald’s father appears to have been called John, it is probable
that his first son would also have been named John, in honour of his paternal grandfather. A possible solution is
that John was born in a different parish.
The position is complicated by the existence of another John, born to Donald’s brother Malcolm McIntyre and his wife
Janet McNeil on 28th January 1795, described in this source as being ‘spouses in Rochose’.

The block entry in the Buchanan Parish Register, as referred to above, reads:
