Marjory Martin

1763 - ?

Marjory Martin was baptised in Buchanan Parish, as recorded by an entry dated 22nd May 1763:

Patrick Martin and Janet McNiel spouses in Gartincaber had a Daughter baptized called Marjory.

Forebears

As narrated by an entry in the Buchanan Parish Register dated 16th December 1753:

Married 14 Janry 1754 at Buchanan – Patherick Martin Widower and Janet Mcniel both Parishoners gave up their names for proclamation in order to Marriage

It will be noted that Patrick, or Patherick, as the name is rendered here, had evidently been married previously. An entry relating to the marriage of ‘Patrick Mairtin’ at Miltoun of Buchanan on 30th July 1733 appears in the Buchanan Parish Register. His wife’s name was Margaret Mc(Gregor?) alias ‘Mc farlan’, and they were stated to be ‘both in this parifh’. This presumably relates to Patrick himself, or else to a close relative of the same name.

Notice however that an entry in the Buchanan Parish Register dated 22nd July 1730 discloses that ‘Patrick Mairton at Miltoun of Buchanan and Elizabeth Mcfarlan spouses had a lawfull fon & baptized called Patrick’. One likely interpretation of these various entries might be that it was Patrick, born 1730, who married Janet McNeil in 1754. His parents were Patrick Mairton and Elizabeth Mcfarlan. Elizabeth died and Patrick senior married Margaret (Elizabeth’s sister?) who was herself a widow. This leaves Patrick junior’s first marriage unaccounted for.

In connection with the baptism of their daughter Agnes Jean in 1756, Patrick Martin and Janet McNiel were described as being ‘Spouses in High Gartoncaber’. In connection with the baptism of Janet in 1759 and Marjory in 1763, they were ‘Spouses in Gartincaber’. For the baptisms of sons Peter in 1765 and Moses in 1766, they were ‘Spouses in Gartincabber’. When Janet ws baptised, their surname was rendered ‘Martine’.

Brothers & Sisters

Marjory had two sisters, Agnes Jean, who was baptised on 25th August 1756, and Janet, who was baptised ‘Before the Congregation’ on 17th December 1759, as well as two known brothers, Peter, baptised on the 18th December 1765, and Moses, on 24th December 1766, all in Buchanan Parish.
