William Leiper

1800 - 17th August 1867

William Leiper, father of William Leiper the architect, was christened on 11th March 1800, as recorded in the Huntly Parish Register:

William Leiper in Huntly had a Son by his wife Jane Mitchel baptised & named William Witnefses Alex Maitland & Wm Leiper

The marriage of William Leiper and Jane Mellis is recorded in the Huntly Parish Register, in an entry dated 13th July 1836:

William Leiper Teacher Glasgow and Jane Mellis in Huntly declared their purpose of marriage & after publication of Banns were married.

The corresponding entry in Glasgow runs:

William Leiper, Teacher in Glasgow, & Jane Mellis, residing in the Parish of Huntly, married 13th July by Mr James Walker, Minister of the Parish of Huntly.

In the 1841 census, William Leiper, a teacher, aged 40, was living in Princes Street, Row, Dunbartonshire. Living with him were Jane, 35, Isobel, 4, and William, 2. These were presumably his wife and two children. They had all been born in Scotland but not in the county. Apparently also living in the same premises were Elspet Bremner, 35, a farm servant, and Margaret Jamieson, 15, whose occupation is scored out. Both had been born in Scotland but not in the county.

In the 1851 census, William Leiper, 51, a teacher of writing and arithmetic, was entered at 1, Little Meadowbank Place, Landward District, Govan. His place of birth was entered as Aberdeenshire, Huntly. His wife’s name does not appear to have been given but she was entered as 48 and also born in Huntly. Their children were Isobel, 13, William, 11 and Jane, 9, all born in Glasgow. The final member of the household was Elspeth Bremner, a house servant, unmarried and aged 48. Her place of birth is difficult to read but appears to be in Argyllshire.

William Leiper, a teacher of writing, married to Jane Mellis, died on 17th August 1867 at seven in the evening, at Lochgoilhead. He was 66 years of age. The cause of death was certified as cardiac disease. The informant, on 20th August 1867, was William Leiper, the deceased’s son, not present.

William Leiper was recalled on his son William’s 1916 death certificate as a school teacher, deceased.
