He was two at the time of the 1861 census and a scholar, entered as 13, in 1871.
He acted as informant on his nephew Charles Stuart Brown’s birth
certificate in 1874 and also on their father’s death certificate later in 1881.
It is provisionally understood that Mungo was born on 1st June 1858 in Bathgate.
This notice which appeared in The Standard on 30th September 1885 relates to the sequestration of Mungo Chapman, auctioneer in Bathgate, and presumably refers to Mungo junior, since Mungo Chapman senior had been dead for four years at this time.
Mungo Chapman, auctioneer (bachelor), aged 27, usually residing at Millburn Cottage, Bathgate, married Helen Milwain
on 6th August 1885, at 138, West Regent Street, Glasgow, ‘By Declaration, in presence of Peter Kidd,
auctioneer, 461 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow and Charles Milwain, Bridge House, Newington Causeway, London, and
residing at South Crescent House, Portpatrick, Wigtownshire.’ A Warrant for Registration of the Sheriff Substitute
of Lanarkshire was obtained on the same day.
At the time of the marriage, Helen Milwain was a spinster, aged 23, usually residing at Bridge House, Newington
Causeway, London, ‘and at present residing at South Crescent House, Portpatrick, Wigtownshire’. Her father, Charles
Milwain, was designated a draper and her mother was recalled as Helen Milwain MS Mc(Keand?), deceased.
Mungo Chapman, manager, Teachest Company, married to Helen Milwain, died on 30th August 1909 at
nine in the morning, in the Infirmary, Greenock. His usual residence was 81, Craigbank, Gourock. His age was entered
as 51. The cause of death was certified after a post mortem examination as ‘Abcesses in Brain’. The informant
on 1st September at Greenock was John Copland, infirmary porter.
