Mary Cairns was born on Thursday, 7th March 1799, as entered in the Luss (Dunbartonshire) Parish Register:

‘Cairns & Gay

March 7th Thursday John Cairns Miller in the Mill of Lufs & Katharine Gay his Spouse had a lawful daughter born, who was baptized the following Saturday & called Mary

Mary Cairns married Peter McIntyre on 20th January 1826 in Luss Parish.

Mary McIntyre, widow of Peter McIntyre, a forester, died on 15th May 1890 at twelve noon, at Calliemore, Buchanan. She was ninety-one years of age. Her parents were recalled as John Cairns, a miller, and Catherine Cairns, MS Gye, both deceased. The cause of death was certified as bronchitis, from which she had been suffering for fourteen days. The informant was Donald McIntyre, her son.

Forebears

John Cairns married Katherine Gay in 1792. Their forthcoming marriage was entered in the Luss Parish Register as follows:

July 21st John Cairns & Katharine Gay both of this Parish gave up their names for proclamation of Banns.

John was a miller and on the evidence of the various Parish Register entries for the birth and baptism of his children, he and Katharine were continually resident at the Mill of Luss at least from 1793 until 1814.

Mary was the fourth of ten known children. The others were John, baptised Friday, 8th March 1793; Robert, baptised Saturday, 24th May 1794; Charles, born Sunday, 25th December 1796 and baptised 26th; Ann born Tuesday, 31st March 1801 and baptised 1st April; a second John, implying the death of the first, born Friday, 17th September 1802 and baptised 19th; Alexander, born & baptised 17th May 1805; Peter, baptised 11th April 1808; Walter, born 10th December 1811 & baptised 16th; Duncan, born 26th May 1814 & baptised 30th.
