This funeral notice, relating to the demise of Alexander Macdonald, was addressed by the son of the deceased,
Andrew Macdonald, from 14, Ardross Street, Inverness, and dated 13th May 1893, to Captain Wimberley,
of Ardross Terrace. The envelope bears a halfpenny stamp from the reign of Queen Victoria, postmarked the
14th.
The back of the letter is adorned by a pair of opposing landscape sketches, in pencil, of Tap O’Noth, a local hilly landmark. The initials ‘D. W.’ almost certainly entitle us to attribute the sketches to (Captain) Douglas Wimberley; it may be taken that these embellishments were made at some time following his receipt of these sad tidings.
