This funeral notice, relating to the demise of Alexander Macdonald, was addressed by the son of the deceased, Andrew Macdonald, from 14, Ardross Street, Inverness, and dated 13^th May 1893, to Captain Wimberley, of Ardross Terrace. The envelope bears a halfpenny stamp from the reign of Queen Victoria, postmarked the 14^th.

The back of the letter is adorned by a pair of opposing landscape sketches, in pencil, of Tap O’Noth, a local hilly landmark. The initials ‘D. W.’ almost certainly entitle us to attribute the sketches to (Captain) Douglas Wimberley; it may be taken that these embellishments were made at some time following his receipt of these sad tidings.
