James Chapman

15th April 1861 - 21st April 1891


James Chapman, the second child of the family to bear that name, was born on 15th April 1861 at six in the morning, at Bathgate Flour Mills. The informant at Bathgate on the 29th was the child’s father, Mungo Chapman, entered as present.

James is also known from the 1871 census, at which time he was a scholar, aged 8, and from the 1881 census, in which he was entered as an unmarried auctioneer’s clerk, aged 18.

According to the family gravestone, James died on 21st April 1891, aged 30. This is confirmed by James’s death certificate. James Chapman (single) died on that date at 4h 30m pm, at Millburn Cottage, Bridgend, Bathgate. He was 30 years of age. The cause of death was certified as pneumonia, from which he had been suffering for two days. The informant on the same day at Bathgate was the deceased’s cousin, Thomas Chapman, of Woodhead, by Bathgate.
