Extract from letter of date 3rd. Sept 1850 from
J. A. Gordon, Knockespoch, Rhynie to
Rev. Harry Stuart, Oathlaw.

You have told of much that I believe to be
correct. I have got a tree of 27 generations
from Adam de Gordon 1056. Ter- or Dalpersie
XVI. was descended from Jock of Scudargue
XII. His 2nd. Son, William of Tillylarmont
XIII (The eldest being Pitlurg my ancestor) George of Tilly-
larmont XIV. His second Son, James of
Lismoir XV. d, 1575. His 4th Son, William
of Terpersie XVI. who built the present Castle,
his great great great Grandson, Charles
XXI of the 1745. married to Gordon of Artloch’s
or doddoch’s daughter, yourself (The Rev:
Harry Stuart) his great grandson 24. or XXIV.

I trace myself also to Harry of Auchlyne
XX. or XIX. 5th. Son of William XVIII, who
was grandson of the 1st. William XVI. of
Terpersie, which William XVIII. married to
Leichiston and died in 1637, and buried at Tullynessel appears to
be one common ancestor.

It is somewhere stated that (In A Le Hay’s
“Aberdeen Castles [close inverted commas omitted]) James Gordon, my great
great grand Uncle, bought Terpersie of the York-
shire Building Company. He was a great
friend of John, Duke of Argyle, who gave him
some silver candlesticks, and I have heard
though his (sic) Duke’s influence he got Terpersie
out from certain payments to the Lady of Terpersie
and various other causes. I take it was so
encumbered that the family could not have
held it longer.

This James was also a descendent of Harry
XIX. of Avelyne & XXIII. generation from
Adam I. If this is any obstacle to the
Lismore Baronetcy it seems from having branched
off too soon. But you will exclaim ------
my friend Kincaid may not be unknown
to you. He was here when I received your
letter and I suggested what a valuable
ally you might be when he told me he
had the pleasure of knowing you well and
spoke highly of your designs”

Extract from letter dated at Dunrobin Castle, 28th
August 1854, from Rev. Harry Stuart, to his
brother, Robert Stuart, Newmill, Birse.

(The Duke of Sutherland) “showing me an old
curious book written by Gordon of Lesmoir, I said
he was an ancestor of mine – ‘I am glad’ said
the Duke, ‘you told me for I shall now take an
interest in you as a kinsman – for we are
half Gordons’, - then he went away and sought
out everything he had connected with the Gordons”

Extract from Mr George Stuart’s Pedigree re
Gold Ring bequeathed to you (W. L.) by the
late Rev. Harry Stuart, Oathlaw.

“The other son, Harry (my brother’s namefather,
& he possesses his gold ring with his name in
full around it) was a Captain in the Marines.”

“Helen Gordon, his sister, being my Grandmother
& daughter of the 7th. Laird – Her aunt ____ Gordon
was a Great-grand mother to Lord Brougham so
his lordship says and a tombstone on the Kirk of
Tullynessle testifies – which makes his lordship
and myself third cousins”
