Christina Cochran

Christina Cochrane was born and baptised In Loudoun Parish, Ayrshire:

Christina lawful Daughter of George Cochrane Labourer and Marion McCleary in Holm Side was born upon the 1st day of December 1830 and Baptized publicly upon the 26th

When her illegitimate son John McColl or Cochran was born in 1855, Christina Cochran was entered as 24 years of age, born Holmside, Loudoun, County of Ayr.

At the time of the 1861 census, Christina Cochrane, was a servant, unmarried, 30, dairy maid, born Ayrshire Loudoun, at (Nimboy?), Avondale, apparently in the employ of William Leiper, farmer.

William Christie, limestone miner (bachelor), aged 30, married Christina Cochrane (widow), 35, on 3rd April 1866 at Braidwood, in the Parish of Carluke, Lanarkshire, After Banns according to the Forms of the Church of the Evangelical Union. Both parties were usually resident at Braidwood. William’s parents were entered as William Christie, ironstone miner (deceased) and Catherine Christie MS Ramsay. The witnesses were James Anderson and Agnes Anderson.

Christian Cochran was designated as a domestic servant on her son John McColl’s 1878 marriage certificate. It has to be questioned therefore whether John and Christina had stayed in touch.

Christina Christie, married to William Christie, coal miner, died on 25th October 1881 at six in the morning, at Law Hill, Carluke. She was 50 years of age. The cause of death was certified as phthisis pulmonalis, from which she had been suffering for one year. The informant on the same day at Carluke was William Christie, her widower, enterd as present.

George was married to Marion, variously McRirick, McCririck and McClearie, in Loudoun Parish, Ayrshire:

George Cochran acted as the informant on the 1855 birth certificate of his illegitimate grandson, John McColl or Cochran.

At the time of the 1861 census, George Cochran, 60, agricultural labourer, born Lanarkshire, Stonehouse, was living at Drumclog School, in premises having four rooms with one or more windows. With him were wife Marion McCririck Cochrane, 50, born Ayrshire, Loudoun; son William, 10; daughter Margaret, 6, and John C. McColl, grandson, 6. All three children were scholars and entered as born in Avondale.

George was wrongly entered as ‘John Cochrane’, a farm labourer, on the 1866 marriage certificate of of his daughter, Christina. Marion’s mother was entered on the same occasion as Marion Cochrane MS McKerie.

When Christina Christie MS Cochran died in 1881, her parents were entered as George Cochrane, labourer, and Marion Cochrane MS McKirick, both of whom were still living.

George Cochran, a thatcher (master), married to Marion McCririck, died on 29th September 1883 at 6h 45m pm, at Commercial Road, Strathaven. His age was entered as 83. The cause of death was certified as bronchitis, from which he had been suffering for two months. The informant at Strathaven on 1st October was the deceased’s son-in-law, Andrew Semple.

George Cochrane was recalled as a thatcher on the 1885 death certificate of his widow, Marion Cochran MS McCririck.

On the combined evidence of her 1885 death certificate and the 1861 census, Marion McCririck was born c. 1810.

Marion Cochrane, widow of George Cochrane, died on 15th February 1885 at 2h 30m am, on Commercial Road, Strathaven. She was entered as 74 years of age. The cause of death was certified as congestion of the lungs, from which she had been suffering for sixteen days. The informant on the following day was William Cochrane, the deceased’s son, of Newhouse, Avondale, entered as present.

James McCririck was recalled as an agricultural labourer (deceased) on the 1885 death certificate of his daughter, Marion Cochrane MS McCririck.

Christina McCririck MS Wilson was recalled as deceased on the 1885 death certificate of her daughter, Marion Cochrane MS McCririck.

Brother

Christina had a brother, William Cochrane, of Newhouse, Avondale, who acted as informant on the 1885 death certificate of their mother, Marion Cochrane MS McCririck.
