Further information concerning Ada’s family background is provided by the 1891 census, at which time she was ten and
the family was living at St George’s Terrace, Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The full entry reads:
Ada Courtier-Dutton was born on 10th September 1880 at 7h 15m am, at Woodland
Villa, off Copland Road, Govan. The informant was E. A. Courtier-Dutton, her mother. Her father, William, was at
that time an underwriter’s shipbuilders’ surveyor. The marriage had taken place on 2nd October 1873 at
Walton on the Hill, Liverpool, England.

Edith Courtier-Dutton (spinster), aged 24, married John Nicholas Morrison Sykes, a commission merchant
(bachelor), aged 26, on 11th September 1901 at St Mary’s Episcopal Church, Glasgow, After Banns according
to the Forms of the Episcopal Church. Edith’s usual address at this time was 30, Kelvinside Gardens, Glasgow.
John was resident at Hamilton Park Terrace, Glasgow. His parents were entered as William Sykes, a commission
merchant (deceased) and Amelia Thompson Sykes MS Crooks.
The bride’s father, William Tranbrooke Courtier-Dutton, was on this occasion designated as ‘Chief Shipping Surveyor
British Corporation’. The witnesses were Margaret Courtier-Dutton and Charles Henry (Russell?).
Jane Courtier-Dutton (spinster), aged 24, married Charles Robert Robertson, a Clerk in Holy Orders, (bachelor), aged
29, on the 8th of September 1903, at St Mary’s Episcopal Church, Glasgow, After Banns according to the Forms of the
Episcopal Church.
Charles’s usual address was entered as St Augustine’s Rectory, Dumbarton and hers as Moraig, Helensburgh.
Charles’s parents were entered as Charles Robertson, also a Clerk in Holy Orders, and Helen Taylor Robertson, MS
McLeish.
The bride’s father was on this occasion designated as ‘British Shipping Corporation Chief Surveyor’.
The witnesses were Ada Courtier-Dutton and John Morrison Sykes.
William Twanbrooke Courtier-Dutton, a Naval Architect married to Ada Emmiline Burkill, died on 31st
December 1903 at 8h 30m pm, at Moraig, Helensburgh. He was 55 years of age. The multiple
causes of death were certified as Bright’s disease, intestinal haemorrhage, cerebral haemorrhage and pulmonary
oedema. The informant was Daisy Courtier-Dutton, his daughter.
William’s parents were identified as Lionel Courtier-Dutton, a gentleman, and Emma Courtier-Dutton MS Hall, both
deceased.
Ada’s brother Sydney lost his wife early in life. Grace Thomson Burr Courtier-Dutton, married to Sydney
Courtier-Dutton, Tea Estate Manager, died on 16th May 1909 at two in the afternoon, at 2, Rosewood
Terrace, Dundee. Her usual residence was entered as U. R. Rajai Tea Estate, Assam, India. She was 31 years of age.
The cause of death was entered as ‘Malarial Neuritis (multiple)’ from which she had been suffering for six months.
Grace’s parents were identifed as William Alexander, Architect, and Margaret Henderson Alexander MS Crawford, both
deceased.
