Jane McGregor

18th September 1826 - 29th May 1904

Jane McGregor was born in Kilmeny Parish, Islay, on 18th September 1826. This is consistent with her husband Hugh Barr’s 1886 application for poor relief, in which her place of birth was entered as Kilmeny, Islay, and her age as 58.

‘Jane’ was apparently her Sunday name, since she was referred to as ‘Jean’ on the Parish Register entry for her daughter Mary’s baptism in 1847.

Jean married Hugh Barr, on 29th January 1846.

At the time of Hugh’s application for poor relief in 1886, Jane was designated as a housewife and was also suffering from bronchitis. An unnamed neighbour was recorded as having given the information that she had seen her the worse for drink. Exactly when and on how many occasions is not stated.

Following Hugh’s death, Jane stayed on at 3, Brown Street, for about two months. Five and a half years in West College Street followed, four years at no. 57, Street, six months at 27 and one year at 32. Jane had been residing at 9, McAlpine Street, back, landlady Mrs McEwan, for two years and one month, when, on 27th December 1894, her daughter applied for and received medical relief, apparently on Jane’s behalf. When the inspector called, the ‘pauper’ had received medication and was unconscious.

From approximately March 1896, Jane resided in Carrick Street for six years and thereafter at 3, Main Street, with daughter Jane, for five months. Jane and her daughter, Mary, had been at 35, Hill Street, Anderston, for one day, when they applied for admission and were admitted to the city poor house in August 1902. Jane arrived there and left on the same day, 1st September 1902.

Jane died at 3h 40m on the morning of 29th May 1904, at 123, Blackburn Street, Govan. Her age was entered (inaccurately) as 67 years. The cause of death was entered as concussion, from which she had been suffering for five days. The informant was her daughter, Janet, of 2, Anderston Quay, Glasgow, who signed with her ‘X’ mark.
