John McIntyre

6th October 1826 - 1st October 1871

Loch Lomond, from the South

John McIntyre was born on 6th October 1826 in Buchanan Parish, which lies to the extreme northwest of Stirlingshire and begins immediately to the west of Drymen. It includes Ben Lomond, as well as the eastern bank of Loch Lomond.

He was consistently designated as a blacksmith in all known certificates referring to him. His death certificate adds the detail that he was a journeyman.

John McIntyre married Margaret Allister in Belfast in November 1852. The date was variously entered on the birth certificates of their children as the 21st, 25th and 26th. The actual date was entered as the 25th on their marriage certificate. John was entered as being a smith and a bachelor of full age. His place of residence was entered as Belfast. The marriage took place in the Presbyterian Church, Rosemary Street, Belfast, and was ‘according to the Form and Discipline of the Presbyterian Church, by licence’. The witnesses were Robert Alister and Mary Alister. These were presumably close relatives of the bride.

It is probable that around 1856 the family home was at 11, James Watt Street, Glasgow, since that was where John’s son, John Livingston McIntyre, was born. By April 1859, they were at 67, Brown Street.

The family was at 90, Parliamentary Road at the time of the 1861 census. John was entered as 34, and designated as a blacksmith. His place of birth was given as Stirling. His wife Margaret appears to have been away from home. With him were his daughter Margaret, 11, and his sons John, 5, and Donald, 3. Something of a mystery surrounds his daughter Margaret, as she is not otherwise known and if her age has been entered correctly, she was born prior to John’s marriage to Margaret in 1852. A possible explanation is that a clerical error has occurred and this is in fact a reference to John’s wife, not his daughter.

They returned to the Clyde District and were resident at 29, Brown Street, from at least November 1863 until September 1866.

By the time of the 1871 census, John McIntyre had been living with his family in the backland at 69, Carrick Street, in a dwelling with two rooms having one or more windows, at least since September 1868. The full entry for the household runs as follows:

John McIntyre, head, mar., 44, blacksmith, b. Stirlingshire, Buchanan
Margaret McIntyre, wife, mar., 39, b. Ireland
John McIntyre, son, 14, rivet boy, b. Lanarkshire, Glasgow
Donald McIntyre, son, 12, rivet boy, b. Lanarkshire, Glasgow
Elizabeth McIntyre, daur, 4, scholar, b. Lanarkshire, Glasgow
William McIntyre, son, 2, b. Lanarkshire, Glasgow
Robert McIntyre, son, 6 months, place of birth not given

John McIntyre died on 1st October 1871, at six in the evening, at 69, Carrick Street, Glasgow. He was entered as being forty-five, although he was still five days short of his forty-fifth birthday. The cause of death was certified as haemorrhage from the bowels, from which he had been suffering for one day, creating the impression that he had died suddenly.

John McIntyre was recalled as a blacksmith (journeyman) (deceased) on the 1872 death certificate of his son Donald and again on the 1873 death certificate of his son Robert.

Brothers and Sisters

John McIntyre had at least one elder brother, Donald, born on 16th August 1816, and a younger sister, Margaret, born on 19th January 1829, both born in Buchanan Parish.

Margaret McIntyre, a domestic servant (single), died on 27th May 1870 at 7h 20m am, at 16, Raglan Street, just off the Garscube Road, Glasgow. She was 41 years of age. The cause of death was entered as black bile, from which she had been suffering for one week, although no medical attendant was present. The informant was M. Livingston, the deceased’s sister.

‘M. Livingston’ is evidently a reference to a further sister, Marjory, who was born at Arrochar, Dunbartonshire, on 12th April 1823. Marjory was married to John Livingston. The relevant entry in the Gorbals OPR, dated 28th March 1852, reads:

John Livingston (seaman) and Marjory McIntyre both in Govan of this parish Married by the Revd David Menzies 6th April 1852
